Prologue: Fundraiser with a Senator
Lucas Riley simply stared at the brown haired woman in a sparkly black dress and black stiletto shoes. The twenty nine year old actor from England was intrigued with her. She had mocha colored hair and tanned skin that looked like it was touched by the sun. She had beautiful baby blue eyes. His best friend, Scott Thomas walked up to him.
“Hey Lucas, I thought I saw you here,” he said as he walked up to Lucas. The brown haired man looked at his best friend since elementary school.
“Scott, old mate, how are you?” he said quickly and suddenly. The black haired man just stared at him.
“Well, that was an excited greeting,” Scott said as he gently patted his shoulder.
“Sorry mate, I was preoccupied with something, how are you?” Lucas asked as he shook his friend’s hand. Scott’s eyes followed to where Lucas was looking. His eyes widened.
“Senator Nicole Donnell is here as well,” he stated.
“What? Senator?” Lucas asked as he looked on.
“Yep, that is her alright, and she had been becoming popular since she had voted for the Equality Gender Pay Act, and among others,” Scott answered. They went immediately to the bar. It was a warm night. It was late spring, and it was also election time as well. Lucas and Scott were at McLean Gardens Ballroom. It was a fundraiser event for the Independent Party. There were purple and white balloons and streamers hanging over from the ceiling. There was a huge ice statue of an American Bald Eagle in the middle of the ballroom. There were men and women in evening gowns and men dressed in suits all over the floor, dancing, mingling, talking, laughing, and drinking wine and champagne.
“Hey, two beers please?” Scott asked the bartender.
“She seems young, and she doesn’t seem to be a senator,” Lucas replied, “I always pictured them as well…old.”
“Well, U.S. senators can be as young as twenty five years,” Scott explained.
“Ah,” Lucas said. He wanted to look at the woman named Senator Nicole Donnell again. He almost didn’t come tonight at the fundraiser. Politics weren’t something he was into, and plus he didn’t have faith in them. He had always thought that politicians were corrupt and greedy and the most dishonest people in the world. Plus, he didn’t have much faith in humanity. But this woman….
“Hi honey,” a woman walked up to him.
“Hey babe,” Scott said as he hugged the woman and kissed her on the cheek. Lucas smiled at the scene but he suddenly felt lonely. It had been two years since Claire had passed away. Claire was his wife and they were married and living happily in London, England. But then…that one dark night when she went into labor……
“Hey, Lucas,” the woman greeted him.
“Hey Joan,” he said as he gently shook her hand. Joan Mason was Scott’s girlfriend. She had long blonde wavy hair. She like Nicole, had sun tanned skin and she had an orange sparkly dress and she had an athletic build, long legs and she was beautiful.
“How are you?” Joan asked, “Did you just get back from London?” Lucas looked at her.
“Yes, and thank God, London was getting so dull,” Lucas answered.
“I hope you can stay in America for good this time Lucas, I really miss you man,” Scott said. Lucas smiled at him.
“Sure mate, I missed you too,” Lucas answered. In his heart, he said goodbye to London. After Claire’s and the baby’s death, he couldn’t stay, not after that.
“Hey, I am getting jealous over here, from the bromance,” Joan joked, half smiling and with her hands on her hips.
“Oh hey Joan, where did you come from?” Scott joked. Lucas closed his eyes, smiled and shook his head.
“Hey, can I talk to you alone for a sec?” Joan asked Scott.
“Oh sure, hey Lucas can you excuse us for a minute?” he asked.
“Sure, mate,” Lucas answered. Scott and Joan left and Lucas was standing alone at the bar, with a bottle of beer.
“Is there anymore beer?” a woman asked. Lucas turned around. He did everything he could to keep a gasp from escaping his lips. There she was, the senator he was looking at.
“Hi,” Senator Nicole Donnell said.
“Um hello, mum,” Lucas said. She took his hand and gently shook it.
“I’m Senator Nicole Donnell,” she introduced herself.
“”Lucas Riley,” Lucas replied back to her.
“I heard that there was an English actor that was coming tonight, I didn’t think actors were into the Independent Party,” she stated.
“Well, we English people are always interested into anything independent,” Lucas stated. Both he and Nicole cringed. That was bad.
“Uh, maybe we should grab a beer, and take a walk,” Nicole suggested.
“Yes, good idea,” Lucas agreed.
They walked around the ballroom, Nicole smiled and shook hands with other people and chatted with them for a few minutes. They even talked to each other between her greeting people. Then, a love song that was slow and popular came on and started playing in the ballroom.
“Would you like to dance Senator?” Lucas asked. After a few minutes since meeting the senator, he started to feel comfortable around her. He felt like he had been spending time with a friend. She was comfortable, friendly, funny, confident, and sweet.
“Of course, I would love to dance with an Englishman,” she answered. He smiled at her.
“Well then,” he said. He grabbed her hand and led her to the dancefloor. Lucas placed his hand on the small of her back and held her hand with the other hand. They danced and twirled around a few times. At the end of the dancing, she was laying her head on his shoulder. Lucas felt happy and amazing. What he thought would be a boring evening with speeches and politicians talking, to a night with a beautiful woman. She looked so content laying her head on his shoulder, her closed eyes and a soft smile. He was so tempted to kiss her on the forehead.
“Hey Lucas,” Scott said as he gently grabbed his shoulder.
“Huh?” Lucas asked as he looked at his friend. Nicole looked up and saw the man that Lucas was talking to earlier this evening.
“Scott Thomas, right?” she asked.
“Oh yes Senator, how are you?” Scott greeted her.
“Good, you?” she replied.
“You know each other?” Lucas asked.
“Everyone knows the CEO of Thomas Inc.,” Nicole answered. Scott grinned.
“Well of course, we are the story of the American Dream,” he replied.
“Your father serving in the US Army and then started the business afterwards,” Nicole described.
“Yes,” Scott agreed. Lucas and Joan watched on.
It was the end of the event. Lucas and Nicole walked together to the doorways. He had wrapped his arm around her and she didn’t seemed to mind it at all.
“Look, since I am living in America now, I was wondering if you can, maybe we could go for drinks, or coffee, or...” Lucas asked.
“Or maybe a movie or something,” Nicole finished.
“Alright,” Lucas agreed.
“Yeah there is a new DC superhero movie coming out and…” Nicole suggested.
“Oh yeah? You like that one?” Lucas asked.
“Yeah, I was wondering maybe we could go see it?” she asked.
“Sure,” Lucas answered. Then, he wrapped his arms around her and leaned in and kissed her. Nicole seemed surprised at first, but then, she closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around him. After a minute or two, he pulled away.
“Wow,” she said.
“Yeah,” Lucas said.
He looked into her blue eyes. What they didn’t knew what lead ahead for them.
Chapter One: New Life and New Love
Nicole and Lucas had been dating for a least a few months. Lucas settled into his new life in America. He got the job of playing a LGBT character on a popular TV show. He got great reviews from critics and he had been featured in magazines. US Senator Nicole Donnell had become a strong voice in the Senate and on the Hill. She had been outspoken about gun control, racial injustice and discrimination as well as she had been supporting equality pay, raising the minimum wage, and civil rights. There had been stories talked about her as well, her being referred as a future president, in fact, the first woman president. But she had her own critics as well, the current president, Nathan Colt, who in the past two years, had not been too popular with everyone and his polling rating was at thirty four percent. Nicole Donnell and other senators from different parties like Republican and Democrats, as well as Nicole’s party Independent had history in the past with this president and no one can get along with him. They were predicting his impeachment but so far, he had been avoiding it. Nicole had been considering running for president, the US President. Other women had tried for it, but no woman had been able to break the glass ceiling on that one. Nicole was thirty four years old right now. She wasn’t in the right age bracket.
She sat in her office, looking over documents from the Hill. She had the TV on in the background, and she had barely listening to it.
“In current news, President Colt made a statement today about the protests in New York City caused by his previous statement about a riot caused by the American Rite, a group that caused violence in major US cities,” the news anchor said.
“The group, American Rite was involved in a riot, interrupting a silent vigil that was being held for the victims of the terrorist attack.” President Colt announced over the TV screen. Nicole looked up at the TV screen. She frowned at the image of the current US President, Nathan Colt. Nathan Colt was a tall lean man with blonde hair that looked like it was fading into grey from age, and he had piercing brown eyes, and he was wearing a blue suit with a white t shirt and a red tie. He had more wrinkles that most men in their fifties. He had the look of anger on his face.
“But folks, let’s be honest, those people in the town square, were kind of in the way, American Rite were protesting against the wrongful arrest of their members for the attack on the town square.” President Colt started to say. Nicole hissed. She didn’t like the man at all and the country had been falling into ruin since he was elected. DOW was going on, the economy was slipping, there was a major drug problem, race tensions were high, and now there was this group the American Rite, who were this new group that came from nowhere and they had been committing terrorist attacks, as well as their members had been committing other crimes such as robbery, and battery. There were even reports that some of the members had raped young women and a few men. Their leader was called the Ghost Queen, and so far, no one knows her real identity or how to stop her. She had an army of American Rite members and they seemed to be growing by the numbers. It was getting closer to New Years Eve. Nicole as well as Lucas were hoping that the new year would bring new hope and happiness.
Lucas stepped through the elevator. He had visited Nicole’s office frequently since they started dating that night in the ballroom. Everyone in the office smiled and greeted him. Plus, he was some of the workers’ favorite actor. They loved his character, Nigel, and they thought he was the most handsome man in the world. One woman smiled at him as he walked by the desk.
“Hi Lucas Happy New Year,” one woman with black hair purred.
“Hi Lucas Happy New Year,” another one, African American woman named Charlotte said.
“Good day ladies as same to you,” he said in his British accent. He smiled at them as he walked by. He was dressed in a suit today like he had always had. His character, Nigel on the TV show, “Light of New York,” was a beloved character, who was the boyfriend of the main character Gabe. There had been kissing scenes and romantic scenes between the two male actors that had some women swooning and there had been a couple of men that had even came onto him. Despite how confident he was acting at the women, he was started to blush and he had been struggling to hide it. You would think he would be used to it by now.
“Hey Mr. Riley,” Nicole’s assistant, Rebecca, a red headed woman said as she looked up from her computer at him.
“Hello Rebecca,” he said when he walked up to the desk.
“She is inside her office, I think she was just finishing up paperwork,” Rebecca went on.
“Good, are you doing well today Rebecca?” Lucas asked.
“Good, me and my husband just got a new puppy a few days ago, and I can’t wait till I get home to give the cutie a big hug,” Rebecca explained.
“Aw, your husband?” Lucas asked.
“Yeah okay sure,” Rebecca answered flatly. Lucas smiled at that. Americans were so funny sometimes.
“Happy New Year,” he greeted as he walked away.
Lucas opened the door and went through the door. Nicole was watching TV and the image of the current US President was on. Lucas sighed. Even he didn’t like the president at all.
“Hello Love,” Lucas said. Nicole glanced away from the TV and smiled when she saw her boyfriend.
“Hey you,” she said as she stood up and walked over to him and hugged him. She was lucky at least to have him. He moved closer to her and kissed her. She kissed him back. His breath tasted like peppermint. Did he had peppermint right before he came here?
After a minute or two of kissing, she pulled away from air and placed her forehead against his.
“Are you alright Love?” he asked.
“Sorry baby, I had a time, dealing with other senators and dealing with…him,” she said as she glanced at the TV. He saw the US President on there, badgering a reporter.
“I am so sorry, why was he elected in the first bloody place?” Lucas replied.
“Don’t look at me, I didn’t vote for him,” Nicole answered. Then, she turned her attention to him.
“I am so glad you’re here,” Nicole said. Lucas looked at her and smiled.
“Me too, Love, me too,” he said as he leaned down and kissed her again. He didn’t tell her yet, but he loved her. He had been lonely and depressed since Claire and the baby died in London. His depression and grief had gotten so bad, he almost became an alcoholic by drinking heavily. Scott went to London to see Lucas but when Scott saw his sad state, Scott took it upon himself to help his best friend. They had always been there for each other, since Scott’s parents died, and since Lucas’ wife and child death, and everything else. Scott helped him stop drinking and got him some counseling. Eventually he came to America and got the gig for “Light of New York.” He got the Nigel character because no one else would play the character because it was a homosexual character. Lucas had no problem playing the character because he didn’t have the views that the other people tried out had and he grew to like the character Nigel and had respect for the actor that played Gabe.
“Hey, I was wondering would you like to join me tonight to Scott’s New Years Eve Party, just for fun ya know.” Lucas asked.
“Of course, baby,” Nicole answered. She looked up at him. She ran her hands all over his upper body. She was able to feel the taunt muscles over his shirt. She remembered the one time, Nicole and Joan watched as Scott and Lucas played basketball and Lucas was shirtless. Nicole couldn’t stop fantasizing about him. They hadn’t made love yet and Nicole wanted to so bad, but she really didn’t want to rush him. She knew the emotional turmoil he went through when he lost his wife. She understood that pain. She went through a divorce a year ago and she was now a single mother, raising her daughter, Abigail practically all alone. Lucas had met the child and most of the time they had been dating, they were also spending time with Abigail. Lucas didn’t mind at all. He loved Nicole and her child as well. They really hadn’t had much alone time with each other.
Lucas pecked her again on the lips.
“Good,” he agreed.
That night, they went to dinner like they planned, and then they went to Scott’s manor after dinner. Lucas had something else planned for Nicole. While everyone was watching the ball drop on Times Square on the TV, he was going to ask her to marry him. He loved her, so much. He wanted her for a wife. He wasn’t sure that he would want to marry anyone again after Claire died. Or at least have a girlfriend for a long time and see where it would go but then, that night at the fundraiser when he saw her across the ballroom, he was in love. He even fantasied about their lives together.
They went to one of the finest restaurants in Washington DC, the 1789 Restaurant and they ordered chicken. They talked about everything that was on their minds, their jobs, their lives and their hopes and dreams. Lucas held her hand off and on throughout the night, and Nicole felt something was different. She was beginning to think that Lucas was up to something. She smiled.
Then, after that, they went to the Scott’s party.
“HEY!” Scott said as the couple walked to them as they walked through the main doors of the huge red brick manor. Lucas smiled awkwardly at his best friend as Scott heavily leaned on him after hugging him.
“Are you alright, mate?” he asked. It was clear that Scott was already drunk by the smell of alcohol on his breath and his speech was slurring. Nicole watched with eyes bugging out and a smile behind her hand.
“Oh..” she began to say. Joan walked up to her, with an almost empty wine bottle in her hand. Apparently, Scott and Joan’s party already started.
“Well, well, well, if it isn’t my new best friend, the Senator Riley lady,” Joan said with a goofy smile on her face and her words were slurred.
“Hi, Joan, are you okay? Did you start without me, not fair,” Nicole jokingly whined. Lucas and Nicole looked at each other and shrugged. At least this would be interesting, and some embarrassing. Joan suddenly leaned into Nicole’s ear.
“I would so be your lesbian girlfriend,” she said as she giggled into Nicole’s ear. Nicole blushed.
Then, it was time for the Ball Drop at the Times Square. Everyone had gathered around all of the TVs that Scott had all over the manor.
“HEY! HEY! The ball is dropping!” Joan said, swaying back and forth, soon won’t be able to stand. Nicole and Lucas stood next to each other,
Nicole looked at Lucas. She wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. She had some relationships before in the past. They hadn’t worked out well, especially with Abigail’s father, Victor, who was still in Arizona, her home state. She was working her way up from being a Specialist in the US Army, to become a US Senator from Arizona, he couldn’t handle being with an independent woman that could do anything and everything she set her mind to. She closed her eyes.
“Love, Nicole,” Lucas said to her. He was standing behind her. She turned around to face him. There he was, standing over her. She smiled in relief.
“Oh okay, Lucas, what is going on?” she said with a smile.
“Take the box,” he instructed her. She turned around and picked up the small velvet red box.
“Open it,” he told her. She opened it slowly. She gasped. Was this happening to her? Was she getting asked to get married? She wasn’t dreaming this was she? Lucas sighed. He slowly bent down on one knee.
Inside the box, there was a white gold blue diamond ring. She looked at Lucas. Lucas was on his knee, and he was face to face to her.
“There is something I want to say,” he began. He seemed confident at first, but on the inside, he was shaking and nervous.
“Lucas,” Nicole said. There were tears that were threatening to come out.
Everyone was paying attention to the ball dropping footage on TV. Seconds went by as the clock
Ticked closer to midnight.
“I love you, I love you so much, I know that we only knew each other for a few months, and we only had been dating for a while, but it would make it the happiest man alive, if you would do me the honor, of being my wife?” he said. Whoa, he didn’t slur or mess up, or choke up? Whoa, he must be more confidant and brave than he thought.
Nicole gasped. There were tears that were now down her cheeks. She had dreamed of this moment all her life.
“THREE…….TWO……ONE!” everyone else cheered. Then, there was a loud roar of cheering
that rang out throughout the manor.
Nicole looked at the man that she loved more than anything.
“Yes,” she said. He smiled at her. He then took out the ring of the box it was in. He slipped on
her left ring finger. She kissed him feverishly on the lips. Both of them blushed during the kiss.
After dinner, they went to Lucas’ studio loft apartment. Nicole suggested that they have drinks at his home. She laid her head on his shoulder when they walked into the apartment and sat down on the couch.
“I love you,” she said to him.
“I love you too,” Lucas said with a smile. “Thank you so much, for everything.” She sighed.
“I can’t believe we are doing this, I am so happy, I feel like everything is complete now,” she said. Lucas sighed as he wrapped his arm around her.
“I cannot stop thinking about our lives together, maybe we could have a child of our own, a big house…” he began to describe.
“Maybe a dog?” Nicole asked.
“Sure, or a pussy,” Lucas suggested.
“What?” Nicole asked, looking up at him.
“Er, I mean a cat,” he said with a sheepish look on his face. She giggled. Then, she leaned up and kissed him on the lips. He started to kiss her back and wrapped his arms around her tighter. She ran her hand down his stomach and slipped it underneath his dress shirt. He pulled away from her. He looked at her in the eyes. There was lust, desire, and love in her eyes.
“I wonder what our wedding night would be like,” she said in a sultry voice.
“Want a preview Love?” he asked.
“Yes,” she answered. Then, he leaned to her and started to kiss her again, this time he gently grabbed her by the arms and pulled her on top of him as he laid back on the couch.
“Show me how an Englishman make love,” she taunted.
“As long as you show how American women pleasure a man, I heard that you ladies can be great under the duvets,” he teased.
“Where is your bedroom?” she asked. Lucas suddenly sat up and stood up. He bent down gently to pick her up. She stood in front of him and started kissing him again. He reached down and grasped her under the butt. Then, he lifted her up and she wrapped her arms around him and she wrapped her legs around his waist. He carried her to his bedroom in the back as she clung to him and kissed him. He laid her on the bed and climbed on top of her. She kissed her on the lips, cheeks, and started to kiss her on the neck.
It was around midnight when they were lying in bed, after making love for a while. Nicole laid her head on his chest as he wrapped his arm around him. He had the best sex in a long time and he wanted to savor this moment. If everything went right, they would have plenty of moments like this.
“You know I know this is totally off topic of what happened tonight, but I have been thinking about making a career change,” Nicole finally said, breaking the silence that was in the room. Her voice sounded hoarse, probably from her moaning and almost screaming at the same time moments ago. Lucas thought she had fallen asleep.
“Oh? Really?” he asked. He wished he had a cigarette.
“Yeah, even though it would be crazy to do it, but at the same time, I get excited just thinking about it and also I cannot stop thinking about it, until tonight,” she went on.
“Oh? What kind of change?” he asked again. He didn’t care what she was talking about, all he can think about, is everything else about her, how much he loved her. He couldn’t remember if he felt the same way for Claire. She lifted her head and looked at him again.
“You promise you will stand by my side no matter what?” she asked.
“Of course,” he said with a smile on his face. He did ask her to marry him right?
“I think that I will run for president,” she answered.
“President?” he asked arching an elbow.
“Yeah, as in President of the United States of America,” she said with a smile. He looked at her with his eyes widened.
“But only one woman had tried, but she failed. Are you sure about that Love?” he asked.
“Yeah, I’m sure,” Nicole answered. She slowly sat up.
“You don’t think I am crazy, do you?” she asked.
“No, I mean I imagine a lot of people think that there would be a possibly of a woman president, there was a black president, so why not?” Lucas answered with a shrug. She smiled.
“I am going to do it,” Nicole stated. Lucas looked at her. Of course, he didn’t think that it could happen. But he saw the determination in her eyes and it sounded like she already made up her mind.
“You want to kick that Colt wanker out of the White House, don’t ya?” he asked. He knew she didn’t like the man and there was a good reason. He had said some racist, sexist, he came off as an egotistical maniac. His approval numbers were in the twenties, and he had threatened to go to war with every country even the US allies. One of those countries was Russia. Russia was about to have their own election soon, and there had been some rumors of a woman that could become their first female president.
“Do you blame me for it? I mean come on, we are going into ruin because of him,” Nicole answered. Lucas sat up.
“Okay, okay, I give, I give, so when are you planning on doing this ‘becoming the first woman president?’” he asked.
“Next presidential election,” Nicole answered. Lucas widened his eyes.
“I think we need some beer,” he said.
“What?” Nicole asked.
“Are you sure? I mean I get the whole becoming the US President thing, but next election? That is at least a four years from now, Love,” he said.
“I know, I know, but I cannot get away from this feeling that I should you know? Like something was telling me to do this,” Nicole said. Lucas sighed. He looked at his future wife, with her tanned skin, her blue eyes, and her dark brown hair that hung over her shoulders and down her back. She was beautiful, the most beautiful woman in the world, as far as he was concerned, and also she was confidant and she was determined. That was one of the reasons why he fell in love with her in the first place.
“Okay,” he said. He knew he was not going to win this argument. She smiled.
“Well, I am glad to know I have you by my side,” she said. He grabbed her by the arms and puller her down on the bed. She curled up next to him and laid her head on his chest again.
“First things first, our wedding,” he said. She smiled and looked up at him. She pulled herself up to his face and kissed him. He kissed her back. She ran her hand under the covers, down his stomach and lower and lower until she touched his manhood. He groaned at the touch. He pulled away from her.
“You want some more?” he asked jokingly.
“I thought that we had enough rest,” she answered. She wrapped her fingers around him. He moaned and hummed at the touch.
“Well then, who am I to stop this?” he asked as he grabbed her and rolled them over on her back.
Soon, there were sounds of Nicole’s moaning and screaming, and Lucas talking dirty to her, him pounding into her and their movements that could be seen in the moonlight.
“Whoa man,” Scott said as he talked to Lucas the next day on the cellphone.
“Yeah, I am getting married,” Lucas said. He looked at himself in the mirror. Wait, was that a hickey? He was in his private dressing room. He was dressed up as his character, he was in a black suit, with a white shirt and a grey tie. Back to work for him. He spent the most wonderful, most intoxicating nights in his life with the woman he loved. He sighed heavily when he saw the red mark on his neck. When did she do that? How did she do that? Do women normally give hickeys or is it the man?
“I can’t believe it, I mean after what happened in London…” Scott began to say. He suddenly stopped talking.
“Sorry I mean I didn’t mean to...” he began to say.
“It is alright, mate, I don’t mind at all, I think I am passed all of that,” Lucas said.
“Wow, I mean damn, well congratulations then, I am happy for you,” Scott said.
“Thanks mate,” Lucas said. There was a knock on the door.
“They are waiting for you Mr. Riley,” the stagehand said through the door.
“Sure, alright,” Lucas called out.
“Well, break a leg, hey maybe when you get off of work, maybe you can swing by the office we could go for beer, or something?” Scott suggested.
“Sure mate, sure, “Lucas said. He was glad he had someone to talk to.
After he hung up on his cellphone. He took one last look at himself in the mirror. He studied his features one last time. There were his hazel almond eyes, and despite he came from England, one of the few places in the world where they get a few days of bright sunshine, he had sun kissed tan on himself as well. He had a light stubble on the lower half of his face. He had taunt muscles under the suit he was wearing for his role. He felt like he was the most handsome luckiest man in the world. All around his dressing room, there were flowers that were gifts to him, from all of his fellow actors and coworkers they gave him when they found out he and Nicole were going to get married. He smiled. Then, taking a deep breath to calm his nerves, he opened the door, and walked out into the stage.
His director and his fellow costar, Greg Hannon, who played “Gabe,” looked at him.
“There is my Nigel,” Greg said. Lucas smiled at him, even though he could’ve swore Greg was flirting with him there.
“Um, right mate,” he said.
Then, he stepped out on the stage, as leaving Lucas backstage, in the normal life, and stepped into the limelight as Nigel.
