Kindle Scout Basics

What is Kindle Scout?
Kindle Scout is reader-powered publishing for new, never-before-published books. It's a place where readers help decide if a book receives a publishing contract. Selected books will be published by Kindle Press and receive 5-year renewable terms, a $1,500 advance, 50% eBook royalty rate, easy rights reversions and featured Amazon marketing.

Kindle Scout is new, and we look forward to consistently improving the experience for authors and readers. Your feedback is important, so please let us know what you think.

What are the basics?
A book is a new, never-before-published work of 50,000 words or more that you'd like to see published.

An author is the person who has written and submitted a book to Kindle Scout.

Readers scout the site and nominate books they want to see published.

Nominations are how readers show support for a book. Readers can nominate up to three books at a time.

A campaign is a 30-day scouting period during which readers nominate books to be published.

The Kindle Scout team makes the final call on which books are published by Kindle Press.

Kindle Press publishes the books discovered through Kindle Scout.

How does Kindle Scout work?
Authors who want to get their books published submit to Kindle Scout and accept the Submission & Publishing Agreement. The first pages (about 5,000 words) from each book are posted on the Kindle Scout website for a 30-day scouting period where readers can nominate up to three books at a time. The more nominations a book receives, the more likely it gets discovered by the Kindle Scout team. If selected, the book will be published by Kindle Press and all the readers who nominated the book will receive an early, free copy and be invited to leave reviews.

How does Kindle Scout benefit writers?
Kindle Press authors receive:

  • Guaranteed advance & competitive royalties: Kindle Press offers a $1,500 advance and 50% eBook royalty rate. Royalties will be paid monthly.
  • Focused formats: Kindle Press acquires worldwide publication rights for eBook and audio formats in all languages. Authors retain all other rights, including print rights.
  • 5-year renewable terms, $25,000 in royalties: If a book doesn't earn $25,000 in royalties during an author's initial 5-year contract term, or any 5-year renewal term after that, the author can choose to stop publishing with us.
  • Easy rights reversions: After two years, all rights to any book that earns less than $500 in total royalties in the preceding 12-month period can be reverted upon request - no questions asked. After 90 days, rights for any audio or translated editions that are not in production can be reverted upon request.
  • Early downloads & reviews: One week prior to release date, everyone who nominated a book that is published by Kindle Press will receive a free copy and be invited to leave reviews.
  • Featured Amazon marketing: Kindle Press books will be enrolled and earn royalties for participation in the Kindle Owners' Lending Library and Kindle Unlimited as well as be eligible for targeted email campaigns and promotions.

How does Kindle Scout benefit readers?
Kindle Scout readers get to preview new, never-before-published books and influence which ones are made available to millions of readers on Amazon. In addition, any time a reader's nomination gets published, they will receive a free copy.

How many Kindle Scout books will be selected for publication each year?
We don't know yet! Any book that is popular with readers could be reviewed by the Kindle Scout team and potentially selected for publication by Kindle Press.

Why does a Kindle Scout campaign last for only 30 days?
We believe that authors should find out quickly if their book will be published through Kindle Press. We think 30 days is enough time for readers to scout new books but short enough so that authors aren't left waiting.

Why do readers only get three nominations at a time?
We want to make sure nominations are meaningful and each book gets the attention it deserves.

How do you decide which books receive a Kindle Press publishing contract?
Nominations give us an idea of which books readers think are great and ready to be published; the rest is up to the Kindle Scout team who then reviews books for potential publication. You can increase the likelihood of selection by adhering closely to our Eligibility & Content Guidelines and by submitting a fully finished, professionally copyedited manuscript.

Why don't you share how many nominations a book has received?
We want to make sure each book gets a fair shot and don't want the number of nominations a book receives to influence other readers. We want readers to weigh in with their individual preferences.

Where do readers come from?
Readers come to Kindle Scout in several ways. Authors get the word out through their own networks. We also reach out to Amazon customers when we think they may enjoy discovering great new books on Kindle Scout.

It is your responsibility to ensure that all content in your submission complies with all applicable laws, including copyright, trademark, privacy and publicity laws. • Choose your words and cover images with care: We don't accept offensive content, including but not limited to racial slurs, excessively graphic or violent material, or excessive use of profanity. We allow submission materials to contain sexual content, but pornography or offensive depictions of graphic sexual acts are prohibited.

Your book cover must follow the basic guidelines. Additionally, book covers are the primary way books are represented on the Kindle Scout site and if selected for publication will be shared with readers on Amazon. • Representations of violence, including weapons, blood, or graphic gore
  • Iconography, paraphernalia, or imagery that represents a distinct world view, point of view, or political stance
  • Partial nudity or provocative imagery that is suggestive of sex or violence

What happens if my submission is not approved for launch?

Submitting your book to Kindle Scout

Is there a deadline to submit?
No. Kindle Scout is an ongoing publishing platform that welcomes submissions 365 days a year.

How do I submit my book to Kindle Scout?
It takes only 15 minutes to submit your book. You'll need:
- A complete, never-before-published manuscript of about 50,000 words or more in Word format
- A great title and cover image
- A book one-liner of 45 characters or less
- A longer book description of 500 characters or less
- A photo of you and bio of 500 characters or less
- An author Q&A (pick up to three of the provided questions and answer each in 300 characters or less per question)
- Social links (up to 4 links to let your readers know where they can find out more about you or your works)
- A thank you note (a note of appreciation to readers who nominated your book, which we will send on your behalf at the end of your Kindle Scout campaign)

We will use all of these materials to build you a Kindle Scout campaign page. You can look at some existing campaigns to get an idea of what this will look like.

If you're trying to launch in a hurry, make sure you have reviewed the Kindle Scout Eligibility & Content Guidelines and your submission adheres to them. Has your book been made available for sale anywhere in the past? Does your book cover or manuscript contain any copyrighted or other proprietary material that you did not create? Do you have an image among the first 5,000 words in your manuscript? Making sure the answer to these questions is "no" will speed up our review process.

Please be sure to read the Kindle Press Submission & Publishing Agreement in full before you submit your work to Kindle Scout.

Ready to go? Submit your book!

Can I use a pen name or author photo that is not of me?
Yes. Just make sure that you have the rights and proper permissions to use the photo and don't impersonate someone you're not.

What are the questions I can choose from for the Author Q&A?
You will be able to choose and answer up to three of the following questions:

What is the inspiration for the story?
Is there a message in your book that you want readers to grasp?
Where can readers find out more about you?
What books have influenced your life the most?
What books are you reading now?
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
What did you learn while writing this book?
Which writers inspire you?
What draws you to this genre?
Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from this book?
When did you decide to become a writer?
Why do you write?
Where did the idea for this book come from?
This book is part of a series, tell us about your series.
Tell us about the cover and the inspiration for it.

What are the requirements for social links?
Your social links must be valid URLs (1000 characters or less) that are related to you or your works. You can also provide a display name (50 characters or less) that will be shown to Scouts in place of the URL. Good examples of links include social media, blog, and author websites.

What are the requirements for the book cover?
Your cover image needs to be taller than it is wide (we suggest 4500 pixels in height and 2820 pixels in width or a 1.5 height/width ratio). It must be in PNG (.png) or JPEG (.jpeg or .jpg) format and no larger than 5MB. Your cover image must also be completely original, should not include any copyrighted or trademarked material to which you do not hold the necessary rights and must adhere to the Kindle Scout Eligibility & Content Guidelines.

Who will receive the thank you notes? And when?
The thank you note you provide when you submit your book will be quoted in an email sent to all readers who nominated your book to announce the final result of your 30-day campaign. It is meant to create a more engaging experience for your readers and also gives you an opportunity to connect with them in your own words. In summary, the best thank you notes:

  • Express sincere gratitude to the readers who supported your work through nominations;
  • Provide specifics for how readers can keep in contact with you (twitter handles, blog URLs, etc);
  • Save the promises and promotions for later (don't promise something you can't deliver).
Here is a good example:

"I'd like to thank you for supporting [Book Title] by nominating it. Having the support of readers like you means the world to me. To stay informed on the next steps for this book, and to read about my other writing projects, I hope you'll follow me via my website or sign up for my newsletter [insert links here]."

Why do you need my entire manuscript to create my campaign?
We review the entire manuscript to ensure it meets the Kindle Scout Eligibility & Content Guidelines before a book is approved for launch. We are also experimenting with new features all the time in order to improve Kindle Scout. Some of those features may require us to share a full manuscript for the purpose of getting feedback.

Can I have images inside the manuscript?
Yes. However, at this time, we are unable to support images within the excerpt portion of book content while your campaign is live, so make sure they are not part of the first 5,000 words of your manuscript. If your books is selected for publication through Kindle Press, you'll have an opportunity to make changes to your manuscript. You may have images in your book, including the portion that was used for your campaign's excerpt, so long as they follow all other content guidelines.

Can I get my campaign's URL before I launch my campaign?
Your launch approval email will include the URL for your Kindle Scout campaign. This means you can prepare your email and social media outreach to spread the word about your campaign ahead of time.

Can my campaign page be edited after launching?
No. Once a campaign is up for nomination it cannot be edited, so be sure to double check your submission in the preview page before submitting. However, you will receive a preview link before your campaign page goes live and you can contact us if you see typos, formatting issues, or critical errors. Additionally, if your book is selected for publication through Kindle Press, you'll have an opportunity to make updates to your manuscript, cover image, and book details before your book becomes available for sale on Amazon.

How long does the campaign page remain on Kindle Scout?
While a campaign ends after 30 days, campaign pages will remain on Kindle Scout to allow readers to keep track of the books they've scouted over time. If your book is not selected for publication, only readers that have a direct link to your campaign page can access it after your campaign has ended - it will no longer be visible to readers by searching or browsing the site. For questions or concerns please contact us.

What can I do to protect my rights in my book?
One way to protect your rights in your original content is to register it with the U.S. Copyright Office. You can learn more about copyright protection in the U.S. (including instructions on how to register) by visiting the U.S. Copyright Office's official website.

How do I know someone won't copy my book?
All Kindle Scout visitors are subject to Conditions of Use that legally prohibit copying any content from Kindle Scout.

If you believe that a work on Kindle Scout has been copied in a way that constitutes copyright infringement, please report it here.

Kindle Press submission and publishing terms

How does the Kindle Press Submission & Publishing Agreement work?
At the time of submission you will be asked to review and accept the terms of the Kindle Press Submission & Publishing Agreement. This agreement gives us certain rights to your work and gives you certain rights and obligations. Below is a helpful summary of the major points in the agreement, but it is neither part of the agreement nor intended to replace reading the full agreement. The agreement alone forms the contract between you and us.

You give:

  • An opportunity to consider your book for publication during a 45-day exclusivity period, starting as soon as you submit to Kindle Scout. You also give us the right to display an excerpt of your manuscript, your name and photo, and other materials you submit to us on the Kindle Scout site and distribute your work in order to solicit feedback.
  • If your book is selected by for publication by Kindle Press, we'll have the exclusive, worldwide right to publish it in eBook and audio formats, in all languages, for a term beginning on the selection date and auto-renewing every five years. If you do not earn at least $25,000 during any 5-year term, you'll have six months after the end of that 5-year period in which you can choose to stop publishing with us and request your rights back.
You get:
  • An opportunity to get paid for your writing. We're looking for never-before-published books of about 50,000 words or more. If we select your book for publication, you will be entitled to a $1,500 advance and royalties on net revenues at a rate of 50% for eBooks, 25% for audio editions and 20% for translations.
  • If your book is selected for publication by Kindle Press, and you later want to stop publishing with us, you'll be able to get your rights back in a variety of circumstances.

What are the circumstances in which I can get my rights back?
Kindle Press authors are entitled to reversion of their rights in the following circumstances by sending an email to kindlepress-reversions@amazon.com - no questions asked:

  • Initial Publication: Reversion of all of your rights if your book has not been made available for sale within 6 months of selection by Kindle Press.
  • Withdrawal from Publication: Reversion of all of your rights if, after two years from first publication, you have earned royalties of less than $500 in the preceding 12 months.
  • Audio Rights: Reversion of your audio rights if, after 90 days from selection, an audio edition of your book is not in production.
  • Language Rights: Reversion of your rights in a specific language if, after 90 days from selection, an edition in that language is not in production.
  • Performance-Based Reversion: Reversion of all of your rights if, at the end of your initial 5-year contract term or any 5-year renewal term after that, you have earned royalties of less than $25,000 during that term and you request reversion within six months.

What if my book is not selected for publication by Kindle Press?
If your book is not selected by Kindle Press, you automatically get all of your publication rights back at the end of the 45-day exclusivity period or as soon as we notify you that your book has not been selected. If you're ready to self-publish, Kindle Direct Publishing can help you self-publish your book in minutes on Amazon.

What royalty will I receive for sales of my work?
You will receive a royalty of 50% on net revenues for eBook sales. "Net revenue" is the amount we actually receive from sales of the book, minus delivery costs and any returns or transactions by customers for which we are unable to collect payment, excluding taxes.

Books selected for publication by Kindle Press may also be published in audio format or be translated into different languages. Amazon will cover all costs associated with producing those additional formats and you will receive royalties at a rate of 25% on net revenues for audio editions and 20% on net revenues for translations.

Will my work be published by Kindle Press in physical formats?
No. Kindle Press only licenses rights to publish your book in eBook and digital audio formats. You may publish print editions through another publisher or choose to use self-publishing services such as CreateSpace.

While your campaign is live

How does a book become "Hot & Trending"?
Hot & Trending is based on nominations and saves by Kindle Scout readers. We update the list hourly.

Is there any way to follow how my campaign is performing?
You can get visibility into the performance of your campaign on a daily basis with stats such as total hours spent visible on our Hot & Trending list, page views, external traffic sources, and a look at other books nominated by those readers who nominated your book. You can see your stats for any current and past campaigns by visiting the "Your Campaigns" page and clicking on the blue "View All Campaign Stats" button next to your title. We update these stats every day with data from the beginning of the campaign up to the previous day (therefore, you won’t see stats from the first day of your campaign until Day 2).

How will I know if my book is selected for publication by Kindle Press?
At the end of your Kindle Scout campaign, you will receive an email letting you know whether your book is selected for publication by Kindle Press. If your book is selected, you will have 30 days to conclude any final edits to your manuscript and provide us with your banking and tax information (so we can pay you) before your book is made available for sale on Amazon.

Publishing your book, royalty reports and payments

My book got selected for publication by Kindle Press! What happens now?
At the end of your campaign, you will receive an email from us with detailed instructions. You will have 30 days to:

- Submit your final manuscript and book cover image.
- Provide us with your banking and tax information so we can issue your advance and royalty payments.
- Remove your full book from any free sites (you can keep up to 10% posted to promote your book).

Once we have all of the necessary information from you, your book will be made available for sale to Amazon customers. One week prior to your book's publication, all readers who nominated your book will receive a free copy and will be invited to leave a review.

When will I receive my advance?
We will issue your $1,500 advance within 30 days after our receipt of your final manuscript, book cover image, banking and tax information.

How often will I get paid? Kindle Press calculates royalties and pays authors monthly. Statements are posted to your APub.com account 30 days after the end of the month in which sales occurred. For example, statements for July sales are posted at the end of August; statements for August sales are posted at the end of September, etc.

Payments are made 60 days after the end of the month in which sales occurred. A $50 threshold will apply if you receive payments by wire.

What price will customers be charged for Kindle Press books? Kindle Press will set the price for published books. We currently expect the price for most Kindle Press books to be between $2.99 and $4.99, and in some circumstances up to $9.99. We are constantly analyzing data to find the most effective price and reserve the right to make changes.

What kind of marketing will I receive? Kindle Press books will be enrolled and earn royalties for participation in the Kindle Owners' Lending Library and Kindle Unlimited as well as be eligible for targeted email campaigns and promotions that leverage Amazon's ability to connect readers with the books they want to read.

If my Kindle Scout submission was not selected for publication by Kindle Press but is now available on Amazon, is there a way to let my Scouts know?
Yes! If you publish your book and make it available on Amazon, return to Your Campaigns page and let us know. We'll then notify the Scouts who nominated your book that it's available.

How do I find the link for the book I've now made available on Amazon?
If your book is currently available on Amazon, navigate to your book's detail page. If you're unsure how to find your detail page, use the Amazon search feature to look for your title and author name. Click on your book when it shows up in the search results. This will take you to you book's detail page.

You can provide the URL for your Amazon detail page by copying the full URL that is now showing at the top of your browser. Simply paste this URL into the box provided on Your Campaigns page.

Alternatively, if you scroll down on you detail page, you should find your ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) listed under the Product Details for your book. Copy and paste this ASIN into the box provided on Your Campaigns page.

What happens once I provide the ASIN or URL for a book I've made available on Amazon?
Once we confirm your ASIN or URL, we'll send an email to all the Scouts who nominated your work during its Kindle Scout campaign. We'll let them know that your book is now available and provide a link to the detail page so they can easily find it.

What if I published my book elsewhere, but it doesn't have an Amazon detail page? Can I share a different URL instead?
We are only able to link to books that are available on Amazon.

I haven't yet published my book that wasn't selected by Kindle Press, so can I tell my Scouts about a different book I've published?
At this time, we are only able to feature books that were submitted to Kindle Scout but not selected for publication by Kindle Press. We encourage you to continue to connect with readers and share more about your other works via social media, your Amazon Author Page, or independent email lists that readers can subscribe to.
